Sheriff Michael J. Anderson

Sheriff Michael J. Anderson

Mike Anderson joined the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office in 1986 as the Undersheriff.  He was appointed Sheriff in 2003 following the retirement of former Sheriff Tom Edmonds and then elected Sheriff in 2004.

Sheriff Anderson obtained his Master of Public Administration Degree from Western Michigan University and his Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University. He is also a graduate of the Michigan State Police Academy and Southern Police Institute. Prior to joining the Sheriff's Office, he served as Commander (Major) of the Uniformed Services Division from 1981 to 1986, with responsibility for administration and management of 1600 officers and 200 civilian personnel.

Sheriff Anderson currently serves on the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries, Senior Services, Inc., and the Kalamazoo Downtown Kiwanis Club.  He is also an honorary life board member of the Kalamazoo Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Statement of Philosophy on Law Enforcement and the Office of Sheriff

My management philosophy surrounds two major platforms; the first emphasizes that the citizens we are sworn to serve and protect are the only reason for our agency’s existence and the second recognizes our agency’s employees as our most important assets.  These two platforms mandate that the leadership of this agency work diligently in (1) seeking the highest possible achievement in training and equipping our employees to perform their mission and (2) exploring every opportunity to partner with our community in using agency resources to maximum advantage for the right purposes.  The latter is absolutely essential for success in reflecting and protecting our community values.

I continue to seek opportunities to conserve tax dollars through consolidation of police services with other law enforcement agencies.  As examples, I was privileged to be instrumental in developing a joint crime lab with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and a consolidated dispatch center with both the City of Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo Township.  I believe our ultimate goal should be to establish a countywide central dispatch and I will continue to work with everyone involved to achieve that end.

I believe the Sheriff must play a strong role in seeking community consensus on how to resolve long-standing problems within the criminal justice system that relate directly to insufficient jail capacity.  While we must continue to work on solutions for the causes of crime such as inadequate education, jobs, parental role modeling and housing, we are also obligated to maintain strong community safety.  Our ability to maximize community safety, however, will never be realized with our current jail.  Ultimately, our quality of life depends upon our willingness to devote sufficient resources to simultaneously address the causes of crime and the impacts of crime.

Another major responsibility of the Sheriff’s Office is providing law enforcement services for the unincorporated area of the county encompassing over 500 square miles and 90,000 citizens. Over the past thirty-five years, the unincorporated area has grown into the largest population served by any law enforcement agency within the county.  Unfortunately, because our road patrol staffing has not increased during this same period, we now must respond to significantly more service calls per officer than any other police agency in the county.  Our lack of patrol resources has gradually forced us to become more and more reactive to crime rather than working to prevent crime, thus denying our community of proper law enforcement. As Sheriff, my responsibility is to keep all concerned properly informed about this growing issue and steadfastly work with the community in developing ways to improve police protection and services.

Finally, I believe the Office of Sheriff, above all, holds a public trust that must be continuously earned through demonstrated integrity and competence.  To that end, my entire career has been dedicated to ensuring that the citizens we serve receive the best possible law enforcement.  Should I be re-elected Sheriff in November, I will continue to serve with integrity and absolute dedication to upholding the honors and tradition of the Office.
